Dental Hygiene Refresher Fact Sheet

This hybrid course was prepared for dental hygienists who have been out of practice for a time and want to get back into the field or for those who are practicing, but feel their skills need updating. Individuals interested in taking the refresher course are required to have an inactive or current Dental Hygiene License. 

The course is designed to review theory and techniques learned in dental hygiene school and on the job. Current “best practices” will be introduced, but specialized procedures will not be covered in great detail and, in some cases, will require additional courses.

Program Goals:

• Dental Hygiene Process of Care
• Definitive Oral Prophylaxis
• Radiographic Techniques
• Review of Current Center for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines
• Review of Hand Instrumentation including Ultrasonics

Course objectives are met through didactic and clinical instruction which will introduce, update, and review current techniques in the practice of dental hygiene.

Program Outcomes: 

Participants who complete the course can be assured they have had the opportunity to learn the most up to date, science-based theory and techniques. The program satisfies the criteria of the NH Board of Dental Examiners when a refresher course is mandated for hygienists who want to renew their active dental hygiene license.

Program Description:

• Online Assessment and Review of Theory (2 CEUs)
  • Must be completed prior to attending clinical portion.
• Clinical Review (18 CEUs)
  • 3-hour lab session to review hand instruments and the ultrasonic tips on a typodont
  • 4-hour clinic session
  • 2-hour radiology review

The online portion needs to be completed before the start of the scheduled hands-on sessions. 

The scheduling of this course will be based upon faculty availability. Students are expected to provide one client for the clinical portion of the course.

Required Materials:

Students will need a variety of Gracey curettes, scalers (universal, sickle), and a typodont to practice instrumentation. Instrumentation is to be practiced weekly on a typodont. If needed, instruments may be available on a loaner basis (for an additional fee). 

Also required for the course: scrubs, lab coat, loups/light if you have them, scrub cap, proper leather or pleather clinic shoes, and two pairs of safety glasses (one for student, one for patient). Latex free gloves, masks, and face shields will be provided for refresher course (NO latex - NHTI’s clinic is a latex free environment).

Prerequisites and Required Documents:

• Current CPR Certification
• College Transcript - please let us know if you are an NHTI graduate as we can access your course history directly
• Copy of inactive or current Dental Hygiene License
• Documentation of taking and passing the ADEX course 
• Dental Hygiene Refresher Application - please print, fill out, scan, and email back

With online and hands-on components, course topics include barrier techniques, limiting contamination, hand washing, handling of sharps, sterilization, disinfection, and disposal of waste materials. Participants must complete assignments online prior to clinical portion. 

Students normally take Infection Control Practice and Preliminary Oral Inspection simultaneously as these classes are prerequisites for our other dental classes.

• Clinical: 9/12/26 from 8:30am - 12:30pm at the NHTI campus

• Course not designed to meet annual OSHA training requirement. 
• Course not required for dental assistant graduates from ADA accredited programs.

CEUs: 6

Required Materials: Students must provide their own personal protective equipment. Required PPE includes 2 surgical masks, N95 mask, safety shield, latex free gloves, scrubs, and a lab jacket.

This covers the Introduction to Dental Assisting in 302.06. With online and hands-on components, this course prepares dental assistants to perform a preliminary oral inspection on patients and includes taking medical/dental histories, obtaining/reading vital signs, basic oral anatomy and terminology, and dental charting. Participants must complete assignments online prior to clinical portion.

Students normally take Infection Control Practice and Preliminary Oral Inspection simultaneously as these classes are prerequisites for our other dental classes.

• Clinical: 9/12/26 from 1pm - 5pm at the NHTI campus

Prerequisites and Required Documents: Please complete the Employment Verification Form confirming a minimum 400 hours of chairside experience.

This course will cover how to apply and integrate basic principles of coronal polishing on a patient so that biofilm and stain removal is attained.

Online: September 26 - October 31, 2026 (Must be completed prior to attending clinical portion.)

Clinicals: October 10, 2026 from 8am - 5pm and October 31, 2026 from 8am - 12pm at the NHTI campus

Required by Student: Treat 5 patients under the supervision of a NH dentist between clinical sessions.

This required class meets once as a group, followed by individual completion of required online activities. Topics discussed assist public health dental hygienists to understand and comply with legal requirements to properly handle patient medical records. Key concepts of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and NH law regarding client abuse are included. Participants draft a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) and are required to complete learning activities prior to class end date.

Online: 10/12 - 10/30/2026 - Online class work is to be completed using the Canvas Learning Management Sytem (Login Information will be provided after registration).

In Person: 10/12/2026 from 6-8pm at the NHTI Campus.

This course addresses systemic conditions and diseases with emphasis on dental hygiene treatment planning, the management of dental and medical emergencies in alternative dental settings, and includes a pharmacology review for common disease states.

Online: 10/31/26 - 11/7/26 (Must be completed prior to attending clinical portion.)

Clinical: 11/7/26 from 9am - 3pm at the NHTI campus

CEUS: 6

Lecture and clinical sessions provide an in-depth study of dental sealants. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the participant will be qualified to legally apply sealants in NH. The student will take the didactic, place sealants on extracted teeth and models and then place sealants under the supervision of their dentist.

Note: This course is not required for Dental Assistant Graduates from ADA Accredited Programs. Course is not appropriate for RDH.

Online:  October 31 - November 14, 2026 (Must be completed prior to attending clinical portion.)

Clinical: Saturday, November 14, 2026 from 8:30am to 5:30pm at the NHTI campus

Prerequisites and Required Documents: ADA Graduate Dental Assistant or Completion of POI and ICP courses.
