Construction Technology-Level 1 (27612)

Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 13 through May 30 plus Wednesdays March 6 & 13, 2024; 4-8pm  Field trips one Saturday per month TBD.

Construction Technology-Level 1 will introduce students to the carpentry/construction trades including safety; construction math; hand and power tools; construction drawings, specifications, and layout; basic rigging; materials handling; building materials, fasteners, and adhesives; heavy construction equipment; and constructing a basic stair layout.  This course provides the basic skills that contractors are looking for as they hire for their entry-level construction positions.  Students will also earn industry recognized credentials in OSHA-10, Confined Spaces, First Aid/CPR/AED, and Fall Protection. Upon successful completion of Level 1, students can then move on to Level 2 and Level 3 to continue to build their skills.

At the end of Level 1 students will:

  • Achieve basic safety skills through the OSHA 10 course;
  • Use construction math effectively;
  • Understand what specific hand tools are  used for;
  • Achieve competency in the use of hand tools;
  • Understand what specific power tools are used for;
  • Achieve competency in the use of power tools;
  • Understand and read construction drawings, specifications, and layout for commercial or residential plans;
  • Apply basic riggings on the job;
  • Show competency in materials handling;
  • Understand what different building materials, fasteners, and adhesives are used for;
  • Understand what specific heavy equipment is used for;
  • Learn and apply basic stair layout.

Instructor Information:

David Descheneaux holds an Associate Degree in Business Administration and has been in the construction industry for over 30 years.  He also served our Country as a Corporal in the Marine Corps Reserves.  David has certifications and licenses in OSHA 30, Construction Supervision, Scaffolding Training, OSHA 10, and Class D.  He will be able to share real-life construction experiences and how to deal with customers, supervisors, and construction crews effectively as well as teaching the hands-on, specific skills necessary for a construction career.
