Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office & Infection Control Basics (23075)

Medical Emergency:
Are you ready for a medical emergency in the dental office? This course will review the common Medical emergencies in the dental office. Participants will understand the importance of vital signs, emergency simulation and identify essential equipment for the dental office.
Learning Objectives:
- List ways to prepare and prevent a medical emergency.
- Identify essential equipment for the dental office.
- Demonstrate the management of a common medical emergency in the dental office.
Infection Control:
Participants will be presented a review of infection control in the dental setting. Updated information stated in the CDC guidelines. Standard precautions will be discussed including hand hygiene, PPE, sharps safety. Protocols for the care of waterlines and disinfection of environmental surfaces.
Learning Objective:
- Describe the current CDC guidelines for infection control in a dental setting.
- Explain the importance of standard precautions.
- Identify proper protocols for instrument processing, care of dental unit waterlines, and disinfection of environmental surfaces.

Caries Stabilization-PHC (23076)

Participants will learn how, when, and why to best employ medical measures for dental disease management while considering therapeutic treatments as being in the interest of patients in diverse socioeconomic populations. Specifically, we will learn indications and contraindications to sealant, silver diamine fluoride(SDF), and ITR placement. We will review and explore emerging topics and materials in minimally invasive dentistry to include Povidone Iodine; Papacarie Duo; Nanosilver Fluoride technology; P11-4 (curodont); and arginine. The hands-on portion of the course will provide participants with an opportunity to place glass ionomer pit and fissure sealants, SDF, as well as practice ITR placement on teeth. Evidence supporting rationale and technique will be presented.

Clinical: April 18, 2026 from 8:00am - 4:00pm at the NHTI campus
Note: This course has 4 didactic credits and 6 lab credits.

Personal Protective Equipment: Students must provide their own PPE. This class requires: a face mask, safety glasses or safety shield, gloves, scrubs, and a lab jacket.

Coronal Polishing for the Dental Assistant (21271)

This course will cover how to apply and integrate basic principles of coronal polishing on a patient so that biofilm and stain removal is attained.
Online: April 4 - May 2, 2026 (Must be completed prior to attending clinical portion.)
Clinical: April 18, 2026 from 8am - 5pm and May 2, 2026 from 8am - 12pm at the NHTI campus

Prerequisites and Required Documents:
- ADA Graduate Dental Assistant or Completion of POI and ICP courses.
- Informed Consent Form

Required by Student: Treat 5 patients under the supervision of a NH dentist between clinical sessions.
Personal Protective Equipment: Students must provide their own PPE which includes a lab coat, safety glasses, 2 face masks, N95 mask, and latex free gloves.

Orthodontic Duties for the Dental Assistant (21071)

Hands on! This course qualifies the orthodontic dental assistant to perform those expanded orthodontic duties designated by the NH Board of Dental Examiners.

Prerequisites and Required Documents: RDH or ADA Graduate Dental Assistant or Completion of POI and ICP courses.
