Preliminary Oral Inspection (POI)/Intro to Dental Assisting (Hybrid)

Description: This covers the Introduction to Dental Assisting in 302.06. With online and hands-on components, this course prepares dental assistants to perform a preliminary oral inspection on patients and includes taking medical/dental histories, obtaining/reading vital signs, basic oral anatomy and terminology, and dental charting. Participants must complete assignments online prior to clinical portion.

Students normally take Infection Control Practice and Preliminary Oral Inspection at the same time, same session as these classes are prerequisites for our other dental classes.

We have two convenient offerings for this class to fit into your busy schedule.

Session 1 - online: 8/31 - 9/14/24

                Clinical: NHTI campus - 9/14/24 - 1pm - 5pm

Session 2 - online: 10/12 - 10/26/24

                Clinial:  NHTI campus - 10/26/24 - 1pm - 5pm

Please note: Course not required for dental assistant graduates from ADA accredited programs; course not appropriate for RDH.

CEUs: 6 Hours

Prerequisites & required documents: Completed Employment Verification Form confirming a minimum 400 hours of chairside experience.

Required materials provided by student: Manual blood pressure cuff and stethoscope.

PPE Requirements: Students must provide their own PPE.  Required PPE includes surgical masks, safety glasses, scrubs, lab coat, gloves, in addition to required blood pressure cuff and stethoscope.

PLEASE NOTE: You will not be registered and a seat will NOT be reserved for you until ALL paperwork as well as payment is submitted.

About the instructor:

Billie Lunt received her degree in dental hygiene from NHTI Dental Hygiene Program in Concord, New Hampshire in 1997 and her Master of Science degree in education and public health from the University of Bridgeport in 2017. She has taught dental oral anatomy, beginner to advanced clinical dental hygiene, community dental health, and ethics. Professor Billie Lunt has a weekly published podcast to support students with content related to didactic and clinical practice. She has held leadership positions in governance and currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the New Hampshire Steering Committee. She is the state representative of the Oral Health Progress and Equity Network and is an active member of the Oral Health Coalition.
