Workforce Education at NHTI

This course has been designed to provide participants with didactic and clinical continuing education to be eligible to administer nitrous oxide (N2O/O2) in the state of New Hampshire.  The course will cover the history of nitrous oxide, neurophysiology of pain and pain control, patient assessment including medical and dental indications and contraindications, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology of nitrous oxide, emergency prevention and management, nitrous oxide armamentarium including safe assembly and handling of gas tanks, masks, tubing, scavenger and monitoring equipment, techniques, record keeping, and regulatory/legal issues.

If a course participant is seeking certification in nitrous oxide administration in a state other than NH, it is the responsibility of that participant to contact the appropriate state board and gain knowledge of and meet the requirements for nitrous oxide administration in that state.

About the instructors:

Professor Katrina Magee RDH, CPHDH, MSDH

Katrina Magee attended West Virginia University for her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and Old Dominion University for her Master of Science in Dental Hygiene. She earned her Certified Public Health Certification from NHTI.  She has taught at Old Dominion University in Virginia, Idaho State University, and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She has been teaching full-time at NHTI since 2004. Professor Magee has practiced in various setting throughout the country including private practice, state prisons, schools, Indian reservations, youth centers, and long-term care. 

Katrina has taught several dental hygiene courses throughout her years in education. Currently she is the Dental Hygiene Community Clinic Coordinator and teaches community dental health theory, preventive oral health strategies, research methodologies, evidence-based dentistry, educational theory, service-learning, oral histology, head and neck anatomy, administration of local anesthesia and the administration of nitrous oxide sedation. In addition, she is involved in clinical teaching on site and off-site in alternative public health settings.

Through the years she has been recognized for her community outreach and excellence in teaching. She has received the Excellence in Education and Service Award from NHTI, the Excellence in Clinical Teaching, and the Teacher of the Year Awards from the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine and the G.W. Hirshfield Academic and Community Service Award from Old Dominion University.
